Blokk5 is a hard-working and ambitious norwegian up-and-coming instrumental rock act, consisting of six Oslo-based guys aged 19 - 23, keeping it going by themselves since 2000.
Blokk5 was formed at the music high school in Sandefjord, Vestfold, Norway, in the fall of the year 2000. Members of the band were at that time 16-18 years old, and from the very beginning hard-working and ambitious about their musical intentions. The first ideas were spinning around a musical project on how to make a blend of simple folk-like jazzmelodies and hard drum´n´bass beats. At the time, Blokk5 was heavily inspired by fellow norwegians Nils Petter Molvær, Bugge Wesseltoft and Eivind Aarset, who enjoyed much success with their nu-jazz.
The first concerts were situated at different spots in Vestfold during the winter 2000/2001. Blokk5 made their first live-demo in this period, a four-track cd with a total playing time of 45 (!) minutes. This demo gained the band a few more gigs around the eastern parts of Norway, including Dølajazz at Lillehammer, Oslo Jazzfestival and the well known club Blå in Oslo.
Blokk5 did their first studiosession with engineer/producer Andreas Barth in November 2002, resulting in a new demo. The musical expression had by the time surely moved away from nu-jazz, now more inspired by postrock acts like Tortoise, (who were present at the gig at Oslo Jazzfestival earlier the same fall). Even though the music turned into tighter, compromised forms, Blokk5 still kept on experimenting, blending acoustic instruments like double bass, saxophone and Gretsch-drums with electrified sources such as electric guitars, rhodes, drum machine, samplers and radio. This blend has become one of Blokk5´s most distinctive characteristics.
In the period 2001 - 2003, the Blokk5 members moved from Vestfold, to establish themselves in Oslo. Some study jazz at the Norwegian Academy of Music, while others stay in a non-academic level. This mix of musical-therorethical knowledge and intuitional joy of playing, gives Blokk5 a lot of different approaches to the compositional process, resulting in arrangement where delicately sophisticated composed parts match and is placed upon surprisingly unforeseen solutions.
In winter/spring 2004, Blokk5 were featured at several well known (jazz)clubs in the eastern Norway as well as performing twice at the underground festival Musikk Under Oslo. The band participated on two cd-compilations at this time. With the track "Laterna Magica" for the Musikk Under Oslo festival-compilation, and a contribution on "CD 3:16" , released by MTG records. Singer Turid Alida (ID) joined Blokk5 on the old hymn "Eg veit i himmelrik ein borg", a tune the band also played (though in a very different way) on their first live-demo.
During the summer of 2004, Blokk5 recorded and mixed their first EP, "Casio Killed the Cornette" in the studio at the Norwegian Academy of Music. The record contains contributions from among others, Jørgen Munkeby (Shining, Jaga Jazzist) and string players known from Lars Horntveth´s Pooka band. The EP was mastered fall 2004 at Strype Audio and is now for sale at concerts and through the band's website. Blokk5 was invited to present the record by radio guru Harald Are Lund at NRK P3 in December 2004. This release shows a band with a unique sound that combines the small details in big arrangements. The record contains five tracks with a total playing time of 29 minutes.
After finishing "Casio killed…", the band started to rehearse again, soon to figure out that there were always something missing. Spending a lot of time in the studio, triggered a lot of new ideas when it comes to instrumentation and musical solutions on the material. The members didn´t spend much time before agreeing to invite the young and talented trumpet player Jonas Vemøy to join the band. Blokk5 has since then played a lot of shows in Norway and France, and Jonas is by now an important member of the band, playing trumpet, guitar and various percussion instruments. With Jonas in the band, Blokk5 has exploded live, now given the opportunity to fill out earlier gaps in their soundscape. Blokk5 has now moved towards a harder and edgy rocklike live sound, and is just now recording a new demo, and will in 2006 record their first full length album.
During June 2005, Blokk5 went on their first tour outside Norway, played five successful concerts in six days at various locations in eastern France. The band is likely to return to play at several big festivals in France next year, as well as performing at different venues throughout Norway and Denmark.
As well as having developed a unique musical expression, Blokk5 is a real firework live. It's impossible to keep unaffected by six vital guys that can't possibly stand still, joyfully performing their favorite home cooked music on a small scene filled up with too many instruments. When performing, members of Blokk5 have been accused of one or more of the following: singing, shouting, smiling, laughing, jumping, screaming, hugging, dancing, going bananas.
Blokk5 today is a result of countless hours of rehearsing, discussion, live-performances, arguments and agreements.
